Network play
When you play while connected to a network, the following phenomena occur.

◆Phantoms
Other players who are in the same location as you at the same time will be displayed faintly as shadows.
Phantoms cannot interfere with you and you cannot interfere with them.
You may be able to guess at what lies ahead based on the phantoms of other players that you see.
◆Bloodstains
If you touch a bloodstain left behind when another player dies, a replay of that player's death will play.
As with the phantoms, these can give you clues about what lies ahead.

◆Messages
The message that you write on the START menu is sent to other players.
Similarly, the messages written by other players are also sent to your world.
For details, see the "START Menu" page.
◆Summon Signs
Create a Summon Sign using a White Sign Soapstone or Small White Sign Soapstone and that sign will be sent to other players' worlds.
If you are summoned from that sign, you can pass over into other players' worlds.
Both living people and Hollows can create Summon Signs, but you must be living in order to summon another player.

Why can't I see Summon Signs?

When you are alive and have created a Summon Sign of your own, you won't be able to see other players' signs.

In cooperative play, up to 3 players can cooperate with each other by using a White Sign Soapstone or Small White Sign Soapstone.
The player doing the summoning is called the "Host" while the players being summoned are the "Clients."

◆Starting Cooperative Play
① A Client creates a Summon Sign using a White Sign Soapstone or Small White Sign Soapstone.
② The Host examines the Summon Sign and summons up to 2 Clients.
③ The Host and the Client(s) play in the Host's world.

Host and Clients

The Host player must be living.
Client players can be either living or Hollow.

◆Rules for Cooperative Play
Players work together to defeat enemies.
Summoning has a time limit, and when this limit is reached the Clients will automatically be sent back to their own worlds.

◆Success Conditions
The players must make it to the end of the time limit by defeating enemies or bosses, having the Host light bonfires, etc.
If they make it through the time limit, the Clients will receive a reward item and be returned to their own worlds.

◆Failure Conditions
Dying, allowing the Host to die, or using return items will return a Client to his or her own world, regardless of the remaining time.
The Client will receive no reward items in this case.

Time Limits and Reward Items

White Sign Soapstones and Small White Sign Soapstones have different summoning time limits
They also have different rewards for the Client players.

Versus play is when two players face off against each other in combat.
The player being invaded is called the "Host" and the invading player is the "Client."

◆Starting Versus Play
1. The Client uses a Cracked Red Eye Orb.
2. The Client enters the world of an automatically selected Host.
3. The Host and the Client play together in the Host's world.

Host and Clients

The Cracked Red Eye Orb and Red Sign Soapstone can only be used by the living.

◆Versus Play Rules

If Client defeats the Host, the Client achieves the objective and returns to his or her own world.>

◆Success Conditions
Defeat the Host.
If the Host is defeated, the Client will get a reward item and return to his or her own world.

◆Failure Conditions
If the Client dies or uses a return item, or if the Host enters a boss's room, the Client will be returned to his or her own world.
The Client will receive no reward items in this case.
A variety of multiplayer game play types can be enjoyed by entering into covenants with certain NPCs.
Covenants give you more play style options for network play.

The 3 covenants that have been implemented in the Network Test Version of the game are described below.

◆Way of Blue
This is the initial covenant of all non-Warrior players.
When a player with the Way of Blue covenant is invaded by a player using a Cracked Red Eye Orb, a player with the Blue Sentinels covenant will automatically be summoned to aid them.

◆Blue Sentinels
This is the initial covenant of all Warrior players.
They are automatically summoned to Hosts who have the Way of Blue covenant to aid them when they are invaded. They will cooperate with the Host to fight off the invading player.
Defeating the invading player allows them to receive a reward item and return to their own world.

◆Brotherhood of Blood
This is a covenant that exists somewhere in a stage of the Network Test Version of the game.
Players with this covenant aim to invade Host players' worlds and defeat them.
Also, they can earn items by defeating Blue Sentinels who come to the aid of players with the Way of Blue covenant.
