In addition to the basic controls, you can also perform a variety of actions by using different button combinations.
Perform a dash by pressing the × button while running (moving the left stick a large amount in any direction).
Performing a dash consumes Stamina.
Press down on the left stick (L3 button) while dashing to jump forward.
Press the × button and move the left stick to roll in the direction you pressed.
Rolling can be an effective way to dodge enemy attacks.
Press the × button while not moving the left stick to step quickly backwards.
Press the R1 button after a backstep to perform a dash attack.
Performing a backstep followed by a dash attack lets you evade an enemy attack and then immediately counterattack.
Approach a ladder and press the ○ button to step on it, then use the left stick to move up and down.
To quickly climb up a ladder, press the × button while climbing.
To quickly climb down a ladder, hold the × button and press down on the left stick.
Quickly climbing up or down a ladder uses Stamina.
The offensive and defensive actions you can perform will change depending on the weapons and armor you have equipped.
Try selecting equipment that matches your own play style.
Press the R3 button to lock on to a nearby enemy.
If there are multiple enemies nearby, you can use the right stick while locked on to change your target.
Press the R3 button again to cancel lock-on.
When you are locked on to a target, your character will always face that target.
If there are no enemies nearby, pressing R3 will reset the camera instead.
◆Right Hand Weapon Action
Press the R1 or R2 button to attack with the weapon you have equipped in your right hand.
The R1 button performs a normal attack, while the R2 button performs a stronger attack.
However, in most cases attacks with the R2 button are slower.
◆Left Hand Weapon Action
Press the L1 or L2 button to use the weapon you have equipped in your left hand. The action performed will depend on the type of item you have equipped in your left hand.
Press the R1 button at the same time as pressing forward on the left stick to perform a shove attack.
A shove attack can break an opponent's guard.
Press the R2 button at the same time as pressing forward on the left stick to perform a jump attack.
Hold down the R1 or R2 button while falling to attack an enemy from above.
You can also attack while climbing up or down a ladder.
Press the R1 or R2 button to attack upward, and the L1 or L2 button to attack downward.
Critical hits are attacks that do a large amount of damage to enemies.
Performing a follow-up attack after parrying with a shield, or attacking an enemy from behind with the R1 button can both cause critical hits.
Some enemies' attacks cannot be parried, and some may not be subject to critical hits even if attacked from behind.
From "Equipment" you can select the equipment that you want to use.
Press the right directional button to change your right hand equipment, left for your left hand equipment, up for spells and down for items.
A preview of the next item in line is shown for the Spell and Item slots.
◆Switching Between One-Handed and Two-Handed Wielding
Press the △ button to use both hands to hold the item equipped in your right hand.
Hold down the △ button to hold use both hands to hold the item equipped in your left hand.
In either case, pressing the △ button again will cancel two-handed wielding.
When you have certain weapons equipped in your left and right hands, holding down the △ button will allow you to dual wield rather than use two hands. When dual wielding, pressing the L1 and L2 buttons will perform a unique dual-wielding attack motion.
In order to use spells (sorcery or miracles), you must have an appropriate catalyst equipped in your right or left hand.
After selecting a spell with the up directional button, press the R1 or R2 button (if the catalyst is in your right hand) or the L1 or L2 button (if it is in your left hand) to cast the spell.
To cast spells, you must have attuned them in advance using the Bonfire menu.
Each spell can only be used a certain number of times before you must rest at a bonfire or use an item to recover your energy.
To use a ranged weapon, you must have ammunition such as arrows or bolts equipped.
Press the L1 or R1 button to ready and shoot the weapon. There are two kinds of ranged weapons: bows and crossbows. Each requires a different kind of ammunition.
When you have a bow equipped in both hands, you can press the L1 (if the bow is equipped in your right hand) or the R1 button (if it is in your left) to enter aimed shot mode.
You will remain in aimed shot mode only as long as you hold down the L1 or R1 button.
Only bows can use aimed shot mode. It is not usable with crossbows.
Switching Arrows or Bolts
If you have two kinds of arrows or bolts in your quiver, when your bow is equipped the L1 and L2 buttons (or R1 and R2 buttons) will
shoot different types of ammunition.
